What Are You Not Saying?

When was the last time you gave some thought to what you say OTHER than what you say with words?

body-languageFor example, if you are in a meeting, are you sitting straight, leaning in slightly, paying attention, and participating? Or, are you leaning back, arms crossed, pulled away from the conversation? Your body positioning sends a clear message to the others in the meeting.

If someone walks into your office, is it welcoming or does it emphasize separation between you and your guest? Is the visitor’s chair at the same level as yours, or is it somewhat lower? Do you have family photos and motivational sayings on display, or awards and personal achievements?  What message are you sending – and – is it the message you want to send?

Do you maintain eye contact during conversations or do you tend to look away?  What about facial expressions? Do you unconsciously frown or raise your eyebrows to a contrary opinion? Do you tilt your head in puzzlement at a strange idea?

We’ve all heard that actions speak louder than words. Non-verbal communication can often say much more than the words we choose. What is your body language saying? What are your facial expressions telling people? What message is your environment sending about you?

What are you saying without speaking?

This is a great reminder! I had to look around my office and see what’s on display. I’m confident my bright colors and artwork shows a welcoming place for clients. Thank you for the post!
